Area resource file (ARF): national county-level health resource information database, 2004 ed.

A database containing more than 6,000 variables for U.S. counties. ARF contains information on health facilities, health professions, measures of resource scarcity, health status, economic activity, health training programs, and socioeconomic and environmental characteristics. In addition, the basic file contains geographic codes and descriptors which enable it to be linked to many other files and to aggregate counties into various geographic groupings.

The following changes apply to the Feb. 2001 and later versions of the ARF:

• Data are provided for all FIPS codes: 1992 and later data for Virginia and Hawaii no longer have independent city data combined into theor original counties.
• All Alaska boroughs and census areas are broken out for 1992 and later data.
• For data added in 2001 and later (indicated as 02/01 and 02/02 for Date On in the technical documentation), records for the US territories of Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are included where data are available.
